The name Rooibos comes from Red Bush. It was given its name by Dutch invadors when they met with the original South African inhabitants, the San. Rooibos is Afrikaans for Red Bush. The color red comes from the mountain mineral water, air and hot sun.
The Rooibos tea is made from Fynbos, a tonic plant which only appears in the Cedarberg Mountains area, Western Cape of South Africa. So real Rooibos tea can only originate from this region.
In San groups, medicine men swore to the healing powers of this tea. It was intensively used as a medicine for hay fever and for relaxation purposes. They rolled leaves in bunches and transported it as woven grass on donkeys along the steep mountain flanks. |

Kattekruid: Leaves steeped in hot water for 10 minutes and taken as a tea. Treatment of haemorrhoids. With salvias used to treat measles and fever. Infusions or brandy tinctures for colds, flu, bronchitis, asthma, heart trouble, insomnia, liver problems, typhoid fever, headaches and foot bath for arthritis. Antispasmodic and sedative effects.
