Studies have revealed that compounds and substances found in some of our favorite teas and herbal drinks may help ease the symptoms of heartburn. Obtaining effective heartburn remedies may therefore be as easy as reaching for the cupboard or the spice rack.
Heartburn is an uncomfortable condition in the chest or abdominal area that typically occurs after a meal. This condition is often characterized by one or more of the following symptoms:
- a burning feeling in the esophagus or breast area;
- a feeling of heaviness in the mid-torso;

- growling sounds in the stomach; and

Heartburn is generally thought to be caused by an irritation of the esophagus due to acids from the stomach. This occurrence is believed to be due to the occasional malfunction of the lower esophageal sphincter - a muscular valve near the stomach - which functions as a gatekeeper of sorts for food coming into the stomach. If this valve opens too frequently or doesn't close as firmly as it should, stomach acids can seep through the esophagus and lead to heartburn.
Though the exact trigger for a heartburn attack is quite hard to pinpoint, it is generally acknowledged that binging on food, stress, smoking and obesity may increase the likelihood of heartburn.

Green Tea Green tea is said to help facilitate the smooth digestion of food. It is thought to do a good job of digesting oily and heavy foods, which are triggers for heartburn. It is likewise believed to help keeps acids in the stomach diluted. Due to its high content of the L-theanine amino acid, it also enhances the production of the GABA amino acid which may help the stimulation of the contraction of the lower esophageal sphincter.
Ginger Tea
Ginger contains significant amounts of gingerols and phenols. These are active chemical compounds that are beneficial for treating and preventing heartburn, as they are believed to help strengthen the holding power of the lower esophageal sphincter and keep acids from coming back up into the esophagus. These compounds also give ginger its characteristic pungent aroma.
Chamomile Tea
As stress is said to be an important factor in triggering heartburn, chamomile tea provides the needed soothing and calming effect that may help fight one of the root causes of this painful ailment. This herbal tisane is also known to be quite rich in calcium, and is thus believed to help lower the levels of stomach acids.
Catnip Tea
The catnip herb is a substance that helps expel gas. It is likewise known as a gastric stimulant. It is believed to help the movement of material (such as food & infection) out of the digestive system while reducing muscle tightness and triggering relaxation.
Fennel Tea
The constituents of this herbal infusion include such substances as fenchone, trans-anethole, limonene and a-pinene. These are considered to be responsible for fennel tea's soothing effects on the stomach and prevention of digestive disorders. Due to its carminative properties, fennel tea can also reduce acid and inflammation, as well as gas and bloating.
