White Tea for fighting fat

We’ve all heard of the help that green tea can provide in the battle of the bulge, but now there’s new evidence that white tea may be the new green when it comes to weight loss. The potential anti-obesity effects of white tea have been shown in a series of experiments on human fat cells and researchers have found that an extract of the herbal brew inhibits the generation of new adipocytes and stimulates fat mobilization from mature fat cells. The researchers from Germany, who studied the biological effects of an extract of white tea, the least processed version of the tea plant Camellia sinensis found after treating lab-cultured human pre-adipocytes with the tea extract, that fat incorporation during the genesis of new adipocytes or fat cells was reduced. Apparently, the extract caused a reduction in the gene-expression associated with the growth of new fat cells, and prompted existing adipocytes to break down the fat they contain.

White tea is made from the buds and first leaves of the plant used to make green tea and the black tea we all know. It is less processed than the other teas and contains more of the ingredients thought to be active on human cells, such as methylxanthines (like caffeine) and epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) which are believed to be responsible for many of the anti-adipogenic effects seen in the study.
FYI, white tea also has more anti-viral and anti-bacterial qualities than green tea and higher catechin levels than green tea due to its lack of processing. One study examining the composition of brewed green and white teas found that white tea contained more gallic acid and theobromine and it is said to have more of the amino acid theanine (has relaxing and mood enhancing properties) than green and black teas which are made from older leaves. Caffeine content of green and white teas are similar, though both depend on factors such as the variety of tea, the cut and length of the leaf, and the method of steeping. With all of these incredible properties, I’d say it couldn’t hurt to add some white tea to your green tea regimen and hope for some fat reduction!
